Hey mama, I'm so glad you're here!
Having a baby is one of the most profound experiences of your life. But when you are giving birth in a foreign country, far away from your family, friends, and familiar healthcare system, it can also feel quite daunting. If you are an expat living in the Netherlands, you might have already noticed that the Dutch approach to pregnancy and birth is quite unique.
As an English-speaking birth coach and doula based in Haarlem (serving the Amsterdam area and up to a 60-minute drive), I am here to help you navigate this journey with confidence and peace of mind.
Understanding the Dutch Maternity System
The Dutch maternity system is famous worldwide for its non-medicalised approach to birth. Here, pregnancy is viewed as a natural physiological process rather than a medical condition. You will likely be under the care of a community midwife (verloskundige) rather than an obstetrician, unless there are medical complications. Furthermore, the Netherlands has a high rate of home births, and pain relief (like an epidural) is not always administered as quickly or routinely as it might be in your home country. For many expats, this cultural shift can cause anxiety. This is exactly where an expat doula comes in.
How an English-Speaking Doula Supports You
While your midwife is responsible for the medical safety of you and your baby, my role as your doula is to provide continuous emotional, mental, and physical support. I am your advocate, your guide, and your reassuring presence.
I can help you:
Navigate the system:Ā I explain how the Dutch system works, what your options are regarding pain relief, and the difference between a home birth, a birth centre (kraamhotel), and a hospital birth (poliklinische bevalling).
Bridge the language and culture gap:Ā Even though Dutch medical professionals speak excellent English, having a dedicated support person who understands your cultural background and speaks your language during the intensity of labour is invaluable.
Provide continuous support:Ā Unlike midwives who may change shifts or leave the room during early labour, I stay by your side from the moment you need me until your baby is safely in your arms.
